RFC: Add modern AI literacy and safety resources to curriculum #1411

Description

@KISHORE-KUMAR-S

Problem:
OSSU currently lacks accessible introductory AI literacy and modern AI safety content, failing to fully address the curricular guideline emphasis on societal impact and emerging computing paradigms.

Duration:
1 month

Background:
OSSU’s curriculum provides strong coverage of classical computer science and traditional machine learning topics, but it underrepresents two increasingly areas: (1) beginner-friendly AI literacy and (2) modern AI safety and large language model (LLM) awareness.

The current AI-related materials in OSSU tend to assume mathematical maturity and focus on conventional machine learning techniques. While this is appropriate for depth, it creates a gap for learners who would benefit from early conceptual exposure to AI systems before engaging with formal coursework. Additionally, the rapid adoption of LLMs and AI systems in industry has introduced new concerns—such as alignment, safety, and societal implications—that are not explicitly covered in the curriculum.

To address this, I propose incorporating two high-quality, widely recognized resources:

Elements of AI — a beginner-friendly course that introduces AI concepts without requiring a technical background, helping learners build intuition and contextual understanding early in their studies.
Anthropic Skilljar courses — a set of materials focused on modern AI systems, including safety, alignment, and practical usage of LLMs.

Advantages:

  1. Improves accessibility for beginners by introducing AI concepts earlier
  2. Expands coverage of AI ethics, safety, and societal impact
  3. Bridges the gap between theoretical ML and real-world AI systems
  4. Keeps OSSU aligned with modern developments in computing

Disadvantages:

  1. These resources are less rigorous than traditional university-level courses
  2. Anthropic materials may be more industry-oriented and less academically structured
  3. Risk of curriculum bloat if not positioned as optional or supplementary

Proposal:

  • Add Elements of AI as:
An optional introductory resource before or alongside early OSSU coursework
  • Add Anthropic Skilljar courses as:
Elective or supplementary material in the AI/ML section
  • Clearly label both as:
“Optional” or “Supplementary” to maintain OSSU’s academic rigor
  • Optionally group them under a new subsection such as:
“AI Literacy & Modern AI Systems”
