I sometimes encounter merge conflicts when working with multiple branches. I would like to understand why conflicts occur and the correct process for resolving them without accidentally losing existing changes. |

hi @consultankit88-lang A safe process is: Run git pull or merge/rebase the target branch. |

Merge conflicts usually happen when Git finds different changes in the same part of a file.
A safe process is:
Run git pull or merge/rebase the target branch.
Check conflicted files using git status.
Open each file and resolve the conflict markers (<<<<<<<, =======, >>>>>>>).
Keep the correct changes and remove the markers.
Run tests/build to make sure nothing was accidentally broken.
Stage the resolved files: git add .
Complete the merge with git commit (or git rebase --continue if rebasing).
