🌐 GitHub Multiverse

image

A Decentraland-like, fully functional 3D collaborative metaverse built for developers. Instead of clunky character avatars, every developer walks the world as a custom three-dimensional mouse pointer. Everyone starts in Genesis City, one continuous, organic space around Genesis Plaza (no street grid, no square blocks) made of small themed scenes, with an underground level below the plaza, a metro to every district, and bigger Worlds: interactive mini-games and a Silicon Valley tech campus.

So, imagine to have a fun, useful and 3D virtual dimension world, just for devs like you. Meet new friends, code like a pro, discover who uses the same tools that you do, invite friends to dynamic workspaces and explore your world.

🚀 Features

  • Real-Time Multiplayer Sync: Powered by Socket.io. Every developer's movement, chat, name and wearables are replicated instantly to all connected clients.
  • 3D Cursor Avatars: Everyone is a clean, pastel-colored 3D arrow with a name tag showing the username you chose at sign-in. You walk, run and jump in third person, like in Decentraland.
  • Chat Bubbles: Messages float as bubbles above the sender's cursor and appear in the chat log, tagged with the district where they were said.
  • Minecraft-Style Chat Commands: Teleports, a shared day/night cycle, weather, warps, homes, whispers and more (see Chat commands).
  • Genesis City + Worlds (like Decentraland): new developers spawn at Genesis Plaza, right in front of the square pool that leads underground. The small maps are scenes scattered organically around the plaza, linked by a ring promenade and winding cobblestone paths with lamps and banners; between them you find gardens, cottages, sculptures, kiosks, campfires with benches, picnic tables, digital art frames that open community links and "for sale" signs. The big maps (Silicon Valley, Museum, Debug Dungeon, Open Source HQ, Keynote Amphitheater, Green-Tech Sandbox) are separate Worlds you enter through the side menu, the metro or chat commands (/world valley).
  • Underground Genesis Plaza: step into the square pool in the plaza: the submerged doors slide open, you fall 5 seconds down a square water tunnel lit from above, and land in a rock cave with a Welcome Hall, the Underground Cafe (bar, stools, espresso), the Hall of Internet History (a long red-carpet corridor with lit frames: ARPANET, the first website, BBS, IRC, Usenet, 90s homepages, early browsers...) and, at its end, the Minimal Art Gallery (white exposed concrete, very high ceiling, glass walkways over a water mirror, black frames with a floating View Details button). An elevator takes you back up.
  • Plaza social spots: a Decentraland-style Theatre whose stage screen plays the WWDC keynotes, a Firepit with concentric benches, a Mini-Game Arena with jump pads, Teleport Portals to the Worlds, a Panorama Deck (elevator up to the Hall of Fame and the Newsroom), a Metro station and the Cyber Garage car showroom.
  • Multiverse Metro: press N (or /metro, or E at a station) for a London Underground-style map with four lines (Genesis, Arcade, Leisure, Worlds Express); click a station and ride a train over the landscape.
  • Cyber Garage (in-game vehicles): floating hypercars inspired by Italian supercars and electric sports cars (no brand names), hovering over magnetic light strips with color-shifting paint, plus Tron-style light cycles that leave a fading neon trail. E to ride, E again to get off. In-game items only: no NFTs, no blockchain.
  • Tech Square (far district): Times Square-style LED screens with live data: a GitHub mural of recent commits and Pull Requests (fireworks when a big PR merges), a Big Tech stock scoreboard and dev trending topics (Hacker News, Stack Overflow, Reddit), fetched by the server.
  • Gamer District (far district): the Gravity Flip tower, a translucent skyscraper climbed with trampolines through floor openings, with low-gravity floors and a floating lounge on top that rewards the climb with a rare hoodie.
  • Aero-Glass Oasis (far district): floating glass villas over a water mirror on neon light beams; smart-glass walls switch between clear, mirrored and frosted (E), and low-gravity infinity pools let you float up to the sunroom.
  • Graphic Equalizer · The Tower of Icons: an abstract tower with no walls, whose facade is made of real app icons (WhatsApp, Spotify, Instagram, YouTube, Discord, Telegram, Netflix...). Press E at the jukebox: the music starts and the icon columns pulse like the bars of a giant equalizer. Climb the spiral of floating icons: each one you step on plays its own effect (WhatsApp dials, Messenger and Discord pop chat bubbles, Spotify throws music notes, Instagram flashes...).
  • Skyline of Tech: a ring of skyscrapers around the city carries giant LED billboards with the real logos of big tech companies and developer tools (loaded at runtime from Simple Icons, CC0), and blimps with banners circle the sky. Red mesas with autumn trees and a sweeping arch fill the horizon; the only clouds are the blocky Minecraft-style layer.
  • A Decentraland-style Genesis Plaza: at human scale, with warm cobblestone, a round Welcome Hall (wooden floor, glass waterfall tube, mezzanine, espresso bar, crystals, cafe tables with laptops), the GitHub Multiverse Theatre with its bulb marquee, an Events Wall whose cards jump into each World, a Cozy Pond with lily pads, a bridge and fishing spots, event posters, shops with awnings, a neon tower, a casino, an arch gate, hot-air balloons and showcase shelves of rare hardware, web legends and dev tools.
  • Enterable Headquarters: every Silicon Valley HQ has a real door, a lobby with the company logo, stairs to every floor and the rooftop, open-plan offices with laptops, a glass meeting room and a coffee corner. The House of MAC is an Apple Store with the Mac Finder logo over the glass entrance, Avenue tables with MacBooks, iPhones and iPads to try, a working Genius Bar (ask a Genius for Mac and developer tips), a wall of official Apple app icons, an ad carousel, a Today at Apple video wall, a screen playing Apple's own YouTube uploads and outdoor ad billboards (see House of MAC banners).
  • Roblox-style Actions: press E near objects to work on a laptop (type anything and real-looking code appears, then commit to the Commit Leaderboard), sit on chairs, sofas, stools and lily pads, grab a coffee (speed boost), play Pac-Git Snake on arcade cabinets, fish at the pond, inspect showcase items or jump into Worlds. Emotes: /e wave, dance, cheer, clap, sit, think, ship, coffee.
  • Creative Flight: press F to fly (next to a firepit, F fries your code instead) like Minecraft's creative mode (Space up, Shift down, F again to land). Space always jumps right away, like Roblox.
  • Invite Peers & Private Lobbies: buttons at the top copy an invite link to your current spot or open a new private lobby (?lobby=<id>): only devs with that link see and chat with you there.
  • Interactive Districts: a co-op dungeon crawler against famous bugs, an Open Source HQ where Pull Requests change the map, a keynote amphitheater showing Apple's WWDC keynotes, a museum of forgotten tech and a Green-Tech sandbox.
  • Silicon Valley: one tech campus where the headquarters stand side by side along boulevards around a central plaza: Apple Park, Googleplex, Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub, Tesla, Microsoft, Intel, NVIDIA, HP, LinkedIn, Uber, Netflix, Cisco, Oracle, EA, Adobe and eBay.
  • Autoplay video screens: the keynote screens, the Theatre and the Apple Store play muted automatically when you walk close (browsers only allow muted autoplay; click a screen for sound).
  • Screenshot mode: Shift+U hides the whole interface and leaves only the scenery.
  • Clean, Decentraland-style HUD: only chat bubbles (they fade after a while; Enter shows the history), a small chat field, your location and coin balance, and a dock in the bottom-right corner that opens the profile, places, minimap, metro, Codify, inventory, invites and controls.
  • Codify: the editor colors the code by language (keywords, strings, comments, numbers, functions, types, HTML tags). Press C (or use the dock) to open a code editor on the right. Pick a language, write code and press Add to world: a soft spinning terminal block floats in front of you with your code above it, updating live as you type. Blocks are private (only you see them) unless you tick Visible to others, then the devs in your lobby see the block and its code in real time. E on your block edits it again.
  • Fry your Code: next to any Firepit in Genesis City (a real campfire with logs, embers, layered flames, sparks and smoke) press F (E sits on the benches): your code block goes on a stick and roasts over the fire while bugs pop out of it. It is a playful bug finder (unbalanced brackets, ==, var, leftover console.log/TODOs, hardcoded secrets, bare except:, infinite loops, DELETE without WHERE, unwrap()... plus the browser's own JavaScript parser for syntax errors), with a roast report in the Codify panel.
  • Roblox-style seats everywhere: E sits on benches, sofas, stools, theatre and amphitheater seats, HQ chairs, campfire benches, picnic tables and more.
  • Spawn hub & Events Explorer: the spawn faces a large square pool (14 m, reflective rippling water, tiled walls and caustics) inside a game-lobby style hub: low terraces with blue neon trims and water channels, octagonal tree planters, star pads that jump to the Worlds, a card table, a giant Connect Four, a gazebo lounge and canopy tents. Around the pool, ringed by walls of Top Rated scenes, Events (the Worlds) and live Dev News, with JUMP IN cards, a diving board into the pool and a floating golden arrow. Paths start there and lead to every district, and the districts are linked to each other by winding paths.
  • Multiverse Hotel & mini hotels: an architectural hotel district (giant neon "M" letters around a glass tower, red swirling lobby, spiral stairs, floating beds, teal lounge) plus mini capsule and neon-cube hotels in Genesis City and in several Worlds. E on a bed at night sets your spawn point (/bed); when half of the online devs are asleep the night is skipped for everyone, like Minecraft.
  • In-game economy (not real money): Multiverse Coins (MVC) are earned with commits (+3), chests (+5), supply drops (+25) and the Gravity Flip reward (+50), and spent on land parcels (250 MVC) marked by "PARCEL FOR SALE" signs around Genesis City; bought parcels show the owner. /pay sends coins to another dev. By default MVC live only on the server. Optionally (see Web3 on testnet) they can be mirrored as an ERC-20 token on a test network (Base Sepolia or Polygon Amoy): test tokens have no real value and cannot be bought or sold.
  • Avatar customization: before entering (and anytime with the 👕 button) dress your cursor like a Decentraland backpack: cursor color, classic pixel "deal with it" shades, round glasses, neon visor or heart shades, a jacket cut to the shape of the arrow (leather, puffer, varsity, hoodie, tuxedo) and a cap, beanie, top hat, crown, headphones or halo. Saved on your account and visible to everyone.
  • Underground Cafe menu: E at the cafe menu board orders Italian-style "dishes" with Multiverse Coins. Every dish is a real package of code or tools (Carbonara Docker = a production Dockerfile, Risotto di GitHub = a GitHub Actions CI workflow, Gnocchi Kubernetes = a Deployment + Service, Pizza VS Code = editor settings, Panna Cotta Blockchain = an educational hash chain...): it is served on the counter, downloaded as a file to your computer, opened in Codify and kept in Codify → My packages. Cocktails (Python Negroni, Aperol Script, Terminal Espresso Martini, AWS Cloud Sour, Linux Mint Julep) also give a short buff.
  • Coin indicator & daily bonus: the top-right coin shows your MVC; click it for the daily bonus and the ways to earn more.
  • Sound effects (optional): the hiss of a mouse gliding on a mousepad while your cursor moves, jump and landing, coins, teleports and crickets at night. Toggle with 🔊 or /sound.
  • Timeline Hall (Museum): a building inside a building: lit frames from 1969 to 2005 (ARPANET, Windows 1.0, the first website, Mosaic, Windows 95, personal homepages, the late-90s Apple site, Winamp, Google beta, instant messengers, Mac OS 9, the office assistant, the Blue Screen of Death, Thefacebook, YouTube; illustrated recreations) around the white Memorable Mentions vault with hardware nobody uses anymore.
  • The Hotel: a two-floor log cabin (green wallpaper, a stone chimney fireplace, a mezzanine with stairs, rooms with beds, pendant lamps, cobwebs) with a title card when you walk in. Its back door leads to a fenced backyard with pine trees, a concrete bunker and a hatch (E): below it, a maze of metal ventilation ducts; follow the light strips to the blue vent and it drops you into the Genesis Plaza Underground. In the Multiverse Hotel district and in Genesis City.
  • Softer, less blocky world: every box in the world has rounded edges and surfaces get a subtle grain; Genesis City is paved with stone.
  • Multiverse Forest: gardens enclosed by hedges with a giant tree, a screen counting the trees devs planted (/plant in the Green-Tech Sandbox), green-coding tips on boards, flowers and benches.
  • House of MAC flagship: a two-story stone corner store with LED shop windows showing the Mac ads (public/assets/ads/), neon signs and an open black steel frame on top with giant glowing Apple, macOS and Xcode logos, plus a reflective sidewalk with neon lines.
  • House of MAC macOS section: behind the store, an arc of lit, black-framed panels shows the macOS ads (macOS Tahoe, the Applications folder, Creator Studio, Logic Pro packs and Logic Pro for iPad) under a big macOS sign; E on a panel reads its title. The banners are in public/assets/ads/ and listed in the macos_section block.
  • House of MAC indoor billboard: behind the Genius Bar, a silent reel plays selected clips of three official videos back to back (same reel.html player; the sound stays off even with V).
  • Real place photos on the JUMP IN cards: the Events Wall and the Events Explorer show a screenshot of each place (all packed in public/assets/places.jpg), and a click on a card jumps there.
  • Tesla Roadster reel (Tech Square): one screen plays the flying-Roadster clips of three official videos back to back as a single looping reel (public/reel.html streams each clip from YouTube's own player; nothing is downloaded or re-encoded). The clips and their start/end seconds are in public/maps/github_events.json under roadsterReel.
  • GitHub events screen (Tech Square): a countdown to the next GitHub event (GitHub Universe 2026, Oct 28–29, San Francisco and online), a LIVE badge while it happens (E opens the official site) and the livestream on the screen once its YouTube link is added to public/maps/github_events.json; next to it, replays of past Universe keynotes.
  • Faster start: the welcome screen appears before the scripts finish loading, you enter as soon as Genesis Plaza is built, and the rest of the world appears in the background.
  • Stone pavements: like Decentraland, Genesis City is mostly paved with stone, with round lawns under the trees and real grass only on the outskirts.
  • Sky and edge of the world: Minecraft-style blocky clouds at 150 m that you can fly through (the view gets hazier the higher you go and turns white inside a cloud); past the neighborhoods the land empties out gradually, a dark treeline and rolling hills close the horizon, and an invisible wall stops you at the last coordinate (±640 m).
  • Night lights: path lamps glow with soft halos at night and glowing stones float over pedestals along the paths.
  • More around the plaza: Decentraland-style ad cube towers and a floating LED cube, supertrees with glowing bulbs, the Hall of Builders (pink colonnade), a marble statue, a kinetic sculpture, the Pavilion of Light, open promenades with planters, the Cotton Cloud Shop in the center of the plaza and a mini plaza with a fountain and a floating message cube at every cowork.
  • Living World: a Minecraft-length day (10 minutes of day, 10 of night, 20 in total) with a live countdown in the HUD; at night the sky turns deep navy-violet with stars and a moon while windows, lamps and billboards light up. Rain, snow, thunderstorms, traffic on US-101 and a Caltrain.
  • Immersive Lighting & Shadows: PCF soft shadow maps give the whole world an organic architectural-maquette look.
  • Welcome Screen & Accounts: a sign-up / log-in screen over the README banner. Accounts live on the server with scrypt-hashed passwords and session tokens; your inventory is saved with your account. Already have an account on this browser? You only see a short "Connecting" animation and start straight in the world, with the same look. Each browser keeps a random device key (the server stores only its hash): if your session expired, or the server lost its account database after a redeploy, the game reconnects that device automatically instead of asking for the password (sessions also slide forward every time you play). Log out to stop the automatic reconnection on that browser.
  • Fortnite-Style Loot (for devs): golden chests on street corners all over Genesis City and Silicon Valley, plus a supply drop that falls from the sky every 3 minutes. Instead of weapons you find dev items in five rarities, from a Common Espresso Shot to a Legendary Jetpack.js.
  • Solo Mode: on static hosts with no server, the world still loads and every single-player feature works (the account and inventory are then kept only in that browser).

🆕 New in v8

  • Live Events: a Community Events Board near the spawn (E) with LIVE and Upcoming tabs, local-time countdowns and Jump In. During an event its stage plays the stream (YouTube or Twitch) on a big screen; V toggles its sound and only the nearest screen ever plays audio. Stay 5 minutes near a live stage and the server confirms your attendance: +100 MVC. Events live in public/maps/events.json (id, titulo, organizador, descricao, tipo, urlTransmissao, dataHoraInicio, dataHoraFim, coordenadasDestino {x, y}); if a stream fails, the stage shows an offline card.
  • Glass Cube Store: a Fifth Avenue-style glass cube on a granite plaza with the Multiverse logo floating inside. A spiral stair (and a glass elevator) goes down to the underground Tech Hub: laptops there pay +5 MVC per commit instead of 3. The glass is solid.
  • Bigger, more realistic world: districts are 1.5x larger, hotels and city buildings are taller, and trees are real-looking leafy trees (bark, dense foliage and leaf cards, in green, blossom and autumn, plus pines) with bushes, in denser groves.
  • Beach on the sea: the beach sits on the edge of Genesis City where the ocean reaches the horizon, with palms and islands.
  • The Hotel in the forest: the log-cabin chalet now has its own district in a ring of pines, and its ventilation-duct maze is a 13x13 labyrinth.
  • Night coding soundtrack: at night, while Codify is open (anywhere) or your code is frying at a firepit, "Hand Covers Bruise" from The Social Network fades in, and it fades out when you close Codify, when the roast ends or at sunrise. It plays through a hidden YouTube player (no audio file is shipped) and follows the sound toggle. It is a playlist: by default two licensed orchestral recordings of the track, and you can add more soundtracks with /music add <YouTube link> (/music list, /music next, /music remove <link>, /music clear; saved in your browser).
  • Cursor glide sound: footsteps are gone; while your cursor moves you hear the soft hiss of a mouse sliding on a mousepad (brighter when running), with a faint plastic tick now and then.
  • Realistic surfaces everywhere: stone pavers, brick, wood, plaster, roof tiles, concrete, metal, asphalt, fabric, carpet, marble, granite, sand, grass and water are generated in higher detail with matching relief (bump) and roughness maps; plain-colored surfaces get a subtle world-space grain (pores, mottling, rain streaks), and at night only some offices are lit in the glass facades.
  • Firelight: firepits and campfires cast a warm, flickering light on the ground and benches; at night the nearest fire also casts soft shadows.
  • Genesis City like Decentraland: stone paving around Genesis Plaza and on little squares scattered across the city, green parcels everywhere else, and the generated neighborhoods (trees, lawns, houses, kiosks, sculptures, campfires) now fill the whole city up to its corners. The Glass Cube sits on an open square of the city, without a tree belt around it.
  • Fry your Code at every firepit (press F next to the fire; E sits on the benches), with crackling fire sounds that grow as you get close. Footsteps, birds and other sounds were improved.
  • Genesis Plaza Underground: a lounge rebuilt after the "Welcome to Decentraland" hall (wooden floor, maroon rugs, a glass water tube with a curved gold "Welcome to Multiverse" sign, a mezzanine with a wooden soffit and glass railing, orange spotlights, rounded windows with painted views), lit mainly by the daylight filtering down through the entrance pool (rippling caustics on the floor), a ring corridor (the Hall of Internet History) around the whole underground, an upper floor and the Gig Plaza (cook pizza and coffee, deliver, earn rewards).
  • Crypto Valley (world, next to Silicon Valley): zoned HQs, digital-art galleries, financial towers with LED market screens, floating buildings and a central plaza, still under construction.
  • .jpeg World: a world made of real photo textures with plain white signs. Its entrance is a Minecraft-style world border that turns into an image-search card when you touch it.
  • The Mob Maze, the Candlestick Maze (walls follow real crypto prices), the Pit Arena and more districts.
  • Developers Daily Life museum: an open-air gallery under a white pergola, near Genesis Plaza, with 32 canvas-drawn exhibits on black-framed panels (Too Many Tabs, Mission Control Chaos, the Windows 11 BSOD, It works on my machine, node_modules, merge conflicts, git push --force on Friday, how to exit Vim, centering a div...), each with a humorous description (E to read it all), a scrolling LED ticker, a giant rubber duck, a mountain of coffee cups and a worn-out keyboard.
  • Genesis City minimap card always visible under the coin indicator; F toggles flight.
  • Parcel map with status legend: the top view of the whole city (M) colors every parcel like Decentraland's map, with a legend bar at the bottom: Available (grey, for sale), My Lands (red), Not Available (green, owned by other devs) and Unavailable (dark: districts, Genesis Plaza, commons and roads).

🔗 Web3 on testnet (optional)

Everything works without this. To mirror MVC on a test network:

  1. Copy .env.example to .env and fill THIRDWEB_CLIENT_ID, THIRDWEB_SECRET_KEY, MVC_CHAIN (base-sepolia or polygon-amoy), MVC_TOKEN_ADDRESS, GAME_ADMIN_PRIVATE_KEY and GAME_TREASURY_ADDRESS.
  2. Deploy the token from blockchain/ (cd blockchain && npm install && npm test): contracts/MVCToken.sol is an OpenZeppelin ERC-20 (capped, burnable) whose mint only the owner or the game contract can call.
  3. npm start builds public/vendor/web3.js (thirdweb in-app wallets, gas sponsored). Players log in with email or Google, get a wallet automatically (address shown discreetly), can claim their in-game MVC as test tokens and buy land with an on-chain transfer of 250 MVC (verified by the server before the parcel is granted).

Only test networks are accepted; mainnets are refused by the server.

🔐 Accounts

The first screen asks you to create an account (username + password) or log in.

  • Usernames: 3-16 letters, numbers or _ (case-insensitive and unique). Passwords: at least 8 characters.
  • The server stores accounts in data/users.json (ignored by git): passwords are hashed with scrypt and a random salt, never stored in plain text. Logins and sign-ups are rate-limited per IP.
  • After signing in you get a session token (valid for 30 days, renewed on every visit) saved in your browser, so the next visit only shows "Connecting". The browser also keeps a random device key whose SHA-256 is stored with the account: when the token is no longer valid, POST /api/resume reconnects that device without the password. If the account does not exist anymore (for example a host without a persistent disk wiped data/users.json on redeploy), it is recreated for that device. Log out is in the top-left panel and turns the automatic reconnection off on that browser.
  • For accounts to survive redeploys, give the server a persistent disk for data/ (Render, Railway and Fly.io all offer one).
  • Your username is your in-world name, and your loot inventory is saved with your account.
  • In production, always serve the site over HTTPS so passwords are encrypted in transit.
  • On static hosts without the server (solo mode) the account is saved only in that browser, as the welcome screen warns.

The welcome screen shows the GitHub Multiverse logo over the README banner. For the most reliable result, save the banner image as public/assets/banner.png; if that file does not exist, the screen loads the original image from GitHub.

🎁 Loot

Golden chests sit on street corners all over Genesis City and next to the Silicon Valley headquarters. Walk up to one and press E: the server rolls an item, and the chest respawns 2 minutes later. Every 3 minutes a supply drop falls from the sky under a balloon, with a blue beam of light visible from far away and a chat announcement; it holds Rare to Legendary loot for whoever opens it first. Epic and Legendary finds are announced to everyone.

Rarity Chest odds Supply drop odds Items
Common (grey) 45% - ☕ Espresso Shot (run faster 20s), 🧢 Hackathon Cap, ✅ Green CI Badge (confetti), 🗒️ Sticky Note of Wisdom (dev tip)
Uncommon (green) 30% - ⚡ Energy Drink (jump higher 20s), 🍵 Mug of Infinite Coffee, 💡 Accepted Stack Overflow Answer
Rare (blue) 15% 45% 🦆 Rubber Duck Debugger (a pet that follows you), 🎧 Noise-Cancelling Headphones, 🔨 Git Commit Hammer, 🌀 Teleport Token
Epic (purple) 8% 40% 🧥 Senior Dev Hoodie, 🔍 Debugger Lens (double damage vs bugs 60s), ⏪ git revert Scroll (undo your last teleport)
Legendary (gold) 2% 15% 🚀 Jetpack.js (hold Space to fly 30s), 👑 10x Engineer Crown

Wearables show on your cursor for everyone. Consumables are used up; wearables, the duck and the hammer can be equipped any time. The inventory holds 20 items. The catalog, odds and chest spots live in public/maps/loot.json.

🗺️ Maps

Every map is a JSON file in public/maps/ and is registered in public/maps/worlds.json: small maps get a cell on the Genesis City grid, big maps are marked "world": true and get their own far-away region. Each type in a map is turned into the object it describes (a palm tree, an arcade cabinet, a Kanban board...) by the builders in public/props.js, landmarks.js, museum.js and games.js.

Genesis City (walkable scenes around the spawn)

/world key District What you'll find

💻 Local Setup

1. Prerequisites

Node.js v18 or higher.

2. Installation

# 1. Install dependencies
npm install

### 3. Execution
```bash
npm start
### 4. Open Interface
```text
http://localhost:3000

💡 Pro Tip: Open a second Incognito/Private window next to the first one, create a second account, and see two developers walking, chatting, looting and squashing bugs together.

Deep links drop you straight into a place, e.g. http://localhost:3000/#applepark or http://localhost:3000/#dungeon.

🧱 Adding a map

  1. Create public/maps/map_<name>.json (the existing district maps are bundled in public/maps/districts.json under their file names; a new map can go in its own file or as a new entry in that bundle):
    {
      "themeName": "My District",
      "backgroundColor": "#1e1e24",
      "blocks": [
        { "type": "floor", "position": [0, -0.5, 0], "scale": [40, 1, 40], "color": "#2d2d34" },
        { "type": "kanban_board_todo", "position": [0, 3, -10], "scale": [6, 5, 0.3], "color": "#ffffff", "label": "Kanban: To Do" }
      ]
    }
    position and scale are [x, y, z] in meters relative to the district center. label shows on hover and in the info card.
  2. Register it in public/maps/worlds.json. A small scene takes a free cell on the city grid (districts are built 1.5× the 64 m cell, so a cell district is about 88 m wide), or an exact region anywhere on the parcel grid:
    { "key": "mydistrict", "file": "map_my_district.json", "name": "My District", "description": "...", "cell": [-3, 2], "color": "#ff2d7a" }
    A big map becomes a separate World with its own island, far from the city:
    { "key": "myworld", "file": "map_my_world.json", "name": "My World", "description": "...", "world": true, "region": { "center": [17000, 0], "size": [120, 120] }, "color": "#3a86ff" }

The block type decides the model. Some of the recognized types: floor, wall, road, water, desk, table, sofa, stairs_step, kanban_board_*, sticky_note, palm_trunk, palm_leaves, arcade_cabinet_*, pool_table_base, server_rack, neon_pillar, stage, pedestal, plant, billboard, hq_<company>, and many more (see the rule lists at the end of each builder file). Unknown types fall back to an outlined block.

☁️ Deploying

Multiplayer needs the Node server running on a host that keeps a Node process alive and supports WebSockets (e.g. Render, Railway or Fly.io). Static hosts such as Vercel only serve the public/ folder: the universe still loads, but in solo mode (no other devs; mini-game state stays local).

Accounts and inventories are saved in data/users.json; give the host a persistent disk (or volume) so they survive redeploys. The rest of the game state (leaderboard, murals, Pull Requests, planted trees, live stream, chests) lives in the server's memory and resets when the server restarts.

Optional environment variables:

Variable What it does
PORT Server port (default 3000)
SUPPLY_DROP_EVERY_MS Time between supply drops (default 180000, 3 minutes)
GITHUB_TOKEN GitHub token for the Tech Square commits/PRs mural (works without it, with GitHub's lower rate limit)
FINNHUB_API_KEY Free Finnhub key for the stock scoreboard. Without it the scoreboard says it is not configured: prices are never invented
DISABLE_FEEDS=1 Turn off all live feeds (offline / tests)

⚡ Performance

The world has more than ten thousand objects, so the game only draws what is near you:

  • Distance culling: buildings are skipped only where the fog already hides them completely (the view never changes), and small details (benches, lamps, plants) are skipped beyond 70–170 m depending on the quality level.
  • Automatic quality: the game watches the frame rate and, when it gets slow, lowers the resolution, turns off shadows and draws small details closer; it goes back up when there is room. Use /quality low | medium | high | auto to choose (or minimum on very old computers); the choice is remembered in the browser.
  • Steady walking speed: slow frames are split into small physics steps, so you walk at the same speed at 20 or 60 FPS.
  • Lighter scene: no point lights (fires and lamps glow on their own), shadows only from large objects, and lighter rounded boxes.

🍎 House of MAC banners and logos

The store is ready to show your own images; nothing has to be changed in the code:

Put this file In Shows
finder.png public/assets/store/ Mac Finder logo above the glass entrance
genius-bar.png public/assets/store/ Logo on the wall behind the Genius Bar counter
macbook-air, macbook-neo, m1, macos, mac-apps (.png, .jpg, .jpeg or .webp) public/assets/ads/ Outdoor ad billboards and the in-store ad carousel

Any image format works: macbook-air.png and macbook-air.jpg are the same banner, and the name ignores capitals, spaces and underscores (MacBook Air.png also works). The server lists the files in these folders (GET /api/owner-assets), so the game only requests images that exist. Billboards resize to each banner's aspect ratio. Add more banners to the carousel by listing them in public/assets/ads/ads.json. Until a file exists, the store shows the official Simple Icons logos and generated boards. Apple ads and logos are copyrighted / trademarks of Apple Inc.: only publish them if you have the right to.

🏷️ Official logos and real ads (optional)

Some companies asked Simple Icons to remove their logos (OpenAI, Microsoft, AWS, Oracle, Adobe, LinkedIn, Salesforce), so they show as text. Put their official logo files in public/assets/logos/ (see the README there) and real ad images in public/assets/ads/brands/<brand>.png (or .jpg / .webp) to replace the generated boards. Only publish images you have the right to use.

⚖️ Trademarks & media

Brand logos on billboards, HQ signs and the Apple Store come from Simple Icons (the icon artwork is released as CC0) and the ones used in the world are bundled in public/vendor/simple-icons.json so they work offline (any other icon is loaded from the jsDelivr CDN). Brands that are not in Simple Icons (for example OpenAI, AWS, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe) appear as plain text wordmarks. Logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify the companies; billboards show the logo, the name and a factual description, never real ad campaigns. Company names elsewhere appear as plain text wordmarks in brand colors to identify the landmarks they represent; the buildings are stylized recreations, not copies of real architecture plans or photos. The WWDC keynotes are not stored in this repository: they are played through YouTube's official embedded player from Apple's own YouTube channel, and the screen shows YouTube's thumbnails. The vehicles are original designs only inspired by real cars, with no brand names or logos, and are in-game items (no NFTs). The Hall of Internet History shows illustrated recreations, not screenshots. The Tower of Icons music is generated live in the browser (Web Audio), not recorded songs. The GitHub Multiverse logo is based on GitHub's Octocat mark. All trademarks, including GitHub and the Octocat, belong to their respective owners; this is a fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by any of these companies.

☁️ Deployment & Roadmap

  • Hosting: Requires a platform supporting WebSockets (Render, Railway, Fly.io) for multiplayer. Static hosts (Vercel) will auto-fallback to Solo Mode.
  • Roadmap:
    • Real GitHub API integration (generate maps from actual repo data).
    • WebRTC Proximity Voice Chat.
    • Persistent database storage for murals and leaderboards.
    • GitHub API Core Integration: Connect GitHub personal access tokens to build districts from real repositories and contribution data.
    • Proximity Voice Chat: WebRTC voice that fades in as cursors get closer.
    • Interactive File Editing Node: Click objects to open repository trees or shared notepads in 3D.
    • Persistent Game State: Save leaderboards, murals and merged Pull Requests to a database.
    • Trading: Swap loot with other devs.

🪦 Open Letter to Mark Zuckerberg (Click to expand)

Dear Mark,

We saw what you tried to do with Horizon Worlds. We appreciated the effort, but devs don't need expensive VR goggles to look at low-poly empty plazas. They just need a terminal, a browser, and a way to judge each other's code.

Rest in peace, corporate metaverse. The open-source community takes it from here.
