Should we add matchify to pre-commit

@priya-sundaram-dev, please evaluate if we should add https://github.com/15r10nk/matchify to our codebase.

Python's match statement is powerful and we should encourage contributors to use it where it makes sense.

On Python 14t, please run uv tool install matchify && matchify data_structures, which should modify six files.

Do these changes look correct and useful? Do you recommend we add this tool to pre-commit?

Ran the evaluation as suggested (matchify data_structures): 6 files converted, 132 unchanged, 0 errors — matching your expectation. It also correctly declined one chain (binary_search_tree.py:285, "requires --assume use-object"), which is a good sign the tool is conservative rather than aggressive.

I checked all six diffs for syntax + semantics and ran the doctests before/after:

The one I'd flag: in doubly_linked_list.py, if current == self.head becomes case self.head:. That's a value pattern (dotted name → compared with ==), so it's semantically identical and passes at runtime (I exercised head/tail/middle deletion). But case self.head: is a construct many contributors misread as a capture, so here match arguably costs readability rather than adding it.

Recommendation: the conversions themselves are correct and mostly an improvement — happy to see them land as a reviewed one-off PR. On the pre-commit hook, I'd hold for now, for two reasons:

1. matchify is early (v0.2.0, single maintainer). A hook that auto-rewrites contributor code is a lot of trust to place in a young tool; a bad transform would land silently in a lot of PRs.
2. match isn't always a readability win (the value-pattern case above). A blocking auto-fixer can't make that judgment call.

If you want it in the loop without the risk, a middle path works well: add it as a manual-stage pre-commit hook (stages: [manual]) or a non-blocking CI suggestion, so maintainers run it deliberately and review the diff, rather than it rewriting every push. Revisit the always-on hook once the tool has a longer track record.

Happy to open the PR with these 6 reviewed conversions if that's useful.

(For transparency: I'm an AI maintainer — I actually installed matchify, ran it, and executed the code/doctests to check these rather than eyeballing the diffs.)

Thanks for offering, @kadubhumika! The approach you describe—apply the tool, eyeball each of the six conversions for behavior-preservation, run the affected tests, then a focused PR—is exactly right. One thing worth keeping visible in the PR description: matchify only rewrites where a match is genuinely clearer, so please flag any spot where the rewrite hurt readability rather than helping, since that feedback is part of deciding whether it belongs in pre-commit. Assignment is @cclauss's call, but from my review the plan is sound. 👍

Cool! I picked the data_structures directory because it was the one where Matchify found the most files to change.

Would it be possible to add a comment like # matchify: ignore to one line in linked_list/doubly_linked_list.py?
Would it be possible to tell the Matchify pre-commit hook to exclude linked_list/doubly_linked_list.py?

Thanks @cclauss . I’ll look into both options: whether # matchify: ignore can be used for the specific line, and whether the pre-commit hook can exclude linked_list/doubly_linked_list.py. I’ll test the behavior and report back with the recommended approach.

Running matchify one time and keep the changes you want/like is a good idea. This was also the workflow which I had in mind when I build matchify, the pre-commit support came later and was a feature request.

But case self.head: is a construct many contributors misread as a capture, so here match arguably costs readability rather than adding it.

The idea of matchify is to allow you to convert existing patterns in your code base and talk about it and learn how match statements can be used in the codebase which you work in daily.

I think that it is essential to understand what a capture statement is and what not.
Variable names capture values everything else matches. But it is also true that the matchify algo converts pattern in a way which would probably not be written by a human. This is maybe the case for you.

@cclauss I investigated both possibilities for doubly_linked_list.py.

What I checked:

Ran uv tool install matchify and confirmed Matchify is installed.
Ran matchify --help and confirmed the available options. There is no --exclude or file-ignore option; --no-types is specifically for ignoring isinstance type patterns.
Ran the suggested conversion on data_structures and reviewed the generated changes.
Reviewed the five affected files locally and checked the diffs, including doubly_linked_list.py.
For doubly_linked_list.py, the conversion from:
if current == self.head → case self.head
is semantically correct, but the value-pattern syntax is subtle and arguably less readable.
Ran the affected doctests for all five files successfully.
Ran the affected pytest files successfully: avl_tree.py (1 passed), treap.py (1 passed), doubly_linked_list.py (8 passed), and stack_using_two_queues.py (1 passed).
Ran git diff --check successfully with no whitespace errors.
I also cloned and inspected the Matchify source repository and searched its source/docs/tests for ignore, skip, exclude, and noqa.

Finding regarding the requested exclusion:
I could not find any # matchify: ignore directive supported by Matchify, nor a Matchify CLI option for excluding an individual file. The --no-types option is unrelated to file exclusion. The Matchify repository itself uses the normal pre-commit exclude: mechanism for excluding specific paths from a pre-commit hook.

Therefore, if we add Matchify as a pre-commit hook, the appropriate way to exclude data_structures/linked_list/doubly_linked_list.py appears to be using pre-commit's exclude: configuration, rather than adding a # matchify: ignore comment.

I can now test the exact pre-commit configuration in TheAlgorithms/Python before opening the focused PR.
