docs(contributing): document DCO sign-off and the required merge checks - #4932
Timur Tukaev (tym83) wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
The DCO requirement was only stated in agent-facing guidance, so a first-time contributor learned about it from a failing check. CONTRIBUTING.md now explains the sign-off and how to fix a missing one. DCO and CodeQL become required status checks on main, so the security documents no longer describe them as gates by review convention. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: tym83 <6355522@gmail.com>

💡 Result:
`git commit --signoff` (`-s`) adds a `Signed-off-by` trailer **using the committer’s identity**—not automatically the author’s—at the end of the commit message. The trailer’s meaning depends on the project; Git gives examples such as certifying the right to submit the work under the project’s license or agreeing to a contributor representation. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-commit?utm_source=openai))
Author and committer are separate commit identities in Git. So if they differ, the signoff still names the committer. A signoff is a commit-message trailer; it does not change who Git records as the author. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-commit?utm_source=openai))

Use the commit author’s identity for DCO repairs.
When the author and committer differ, Git’s --signoff uses the committer’s identity. The repair commands can therefore add a Signed-off-by trailer that violates the author-match rule in CONTRIBUTING.md.

+If the committer identity matches the commit author, add the sign-off to the last commit with `git commit --amend --signoff`, or to every commit on your branch with `git rebase --signoff main`. If the identities differ, do not use `--signoff`; add a `Signed-off-by` trailer with each commit author's name and email instead, for example: `git commit --amend --no-edit --trailer "Signed-off-by: $(git show -s --format='%an <%ae>' HEAD)"`. Then force-push the branch.
The `DCO` check verifies this on every pull request and is required to pass before a pull request can be merged into `main`, together with `pre-commit`, `E2E Tests` and `CodeQL`.📝 Committable suggestion

| * *Loosening defaults:* isolation between unrelated tenants is enforced by Cilium egress **by design**, and there is no supported mechanism to disable tenant isolation wholesale or to create flat/shared inter-tenant networking. What is documented is **opt-in relaxation to specific restricted services**: per the [tenants guide](https://cozystack.io/docs/v1.6/guides/tenants/), labels such as `policy.cozystack.io/allow-to-apiserver: "true"` and `policy.cozystack.io/allow-to-etcd: "true"` let tenant pods reach otherwise-restricted endpoints, and broader RBAC can be granted for single-tenant/lab use. (The earlier `isolated` tenant field was removed in favor of these opt-in policy labels.) | ||

The branch protection on `main` currently requires two status checks, `pre-commit` and `E2E Tests`. **CodeQL** static analysis runs on every PR, on push to `main` and weekly; new error-severity alerts are expected to be resolved or explicitly dismissed before merge, but CodeQL is **not yet a required check** — promoting it to one is an open item, and [SECURITY.md](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/blob/main/SECURITY.md) states it as an intention rather than a fact. **zizmor** audits the GitHub Actions workflows themselves and fails on findings such as unpinned actions or over-broad `permissions`; it runs two ways, as a hook inside the required `pre-commit` check (so it genuinely gates merges) and as a standalone workflow triggered only by changes under `.github/workflows/` or to `.github/zizmor.yml`, which is not itself a required check. **OpenSSF Scorecard** runs weekly and publishes to scorecard.dev; the OpenSSF Best Practices badge is maintained. | CodeQL is intended to run as a required pull-request check, so that a newly introduced alert at error severity blocks merge until it is fixed or dismissed. It is **not** currently among the required status checks on `main` — those are `pre-commit` and `E2E Tests` — so today a new error-severity alert is expected to be resolved before merge by review convention rather than enforced by branch protection. | ||

Remove the unsupported CodeQL alert-blocking claim.
The applicable active rulesets contain no code_scanning threshold, and the CodeQL workflow only uploads analysis results. A required CodeQL status check does not block merges based on alert severity. Update this statement in SECURITY.md, GENERAL_TECHNICAL_REVIEW.md, and docs/security/self-assessment.md.
