This PR adds generic lease ownership primitives to the owner crate for OpenHuman #238 (senamakel/openhuman#238), tracked by the storage migration epics #7390 and #8089. It addresses the existing owner issue senamakel#10.

LeaseStore and LeaseGrant provide the shared owner contract. DocumentLeases adapts the core lease store and delegates protected writes to native StorageBackend::for_scope_fenced, preserving atomic document, stream, and blob fencing. The optional file feature adds portable LocalLeases; OS lock ownership is non-expiring until release or process exit. inspect retains raw durable records, while holder provides a lock-aware observation so a dead process does not appear live forever.

Local storage preserves the established .lease lock and .lease.json record format, including legacy non-expiring sentinel decoding, epochs, unclean takeover state, and caller-supplied endpoints. Host-specific profile selection, scopes, heartbeat, and skew policy remain host responsibilities.

Validation on commit 6bc92a54f8d22ae54047ee5fc60b1364678b8cdf:

  • cargo test -p tinystoragedrivers-fence --features file -- --nocapture: passed (11 tests; both subprocess helpers explicitly invoked and passed; doctests passed).
  • cargo test -p tinystoragedrivers-fence: passed (4 tests; doctests passed).
  • cargo clippy -p tinystoragedrivers-fence --all-targets --features file -- -D warnings: passed.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: passed.
  • Independent review reproduced and then verified the local renewal single-winner behavior, mixed-version lock/record/epoch compatibility, endpoint retention, and dead-holder observation. See the epic evidence record for probe details and logs.

This PR is ready for review. It does not claim release availability or OpenHuman host adoption; the host implementation remains in place until this change is accepted and released.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added lease management for coordinating ownership, renewal, release, and takeover, with lease status and expiry information.
    • Added document-backed leases and fenced storage scopes that reject writes from outdated lease holders.
    • Added optional local file-based leases for coordination between processes on the same machine. Local leases do not provide storage write fencing.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a lease contract and two lease-store implementations: one backed by core document leases and one backed by local advisory file locks. It also adds native fenced-scope binding and tests for lease ownership, takeover, and fenced writes.

Changes: Lease Ownership and Fencing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lease contract and record compatibility
crates/tinystoragedrivers-core/src/primitives/leases.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/lease.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/lib.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/Cargo.toml
Adds serializable lease records with legacy field aliases and expiry parsing. Defines LeaseStore, LeaseGrant, LeaseError, and helper functions, then exports the APIs.
Document leases and fenced scopes
crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/document.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/document_tests.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/backend.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/backend_tests.rs
Adds DocumentLeases with tracked grant versions and fences derived from lease records. Adds for_scope_fenced, which delegates to the backend’s native implementation. Tests cover lease takeover and writes across document, stream, and blob domains.
Local advisory-lock store
Cargo.toml, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/local.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/lib_tests.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/Cargo.toml, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/README.md
Adds the optional fs2 dependency and LocalLeases, which uses advisory file locks and persisted JSON records. Tests cover contention, process exit, renewal, release, takeover, and legacy record compatibility. The README describes the local store’s behavior and fencing limitations.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6bc92

The lease primitives work as described. After a power loss, the local lease store can reuse an epoch number. The two lease stores also handle repeated acquisition differently, which matters for host code that re-acquires a lease as a heartbeat. Address these and the small dependency and documentation guideline gaps as bounded follow-ups. None of them blocks the main ownership and fencing behavior.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6bc92

Existing atomic storage checks remain intact, and no new authorization bypass was established. The main risks are local crash-recovery durability and deployment assumptions about lease-directory access and correct storage binding.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new local store synchronizes temporary record contents but does not synchronize the containing directory after replacement before acknowledging ownership. Depending on filesystem crash behavior, power loss could restore an older released record or lose the latest epoch, causing subsequent acquisition to reuse an epoch or incorrectly report a clean takeover. This is a bounded ownership-recovery concern, not a demonstrated authorization bypass: OS locks still provide normal process exclusion, and the local store issues no backend fence.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Local ownership protection depends on filesystem authority over the configured root. A principal able to replace its lock or record entries could undermine coordination across keys under that root. Key hashing prevents direct key-based path traversal but does not establish directory trust. The supplied evidence does not establish adversarial access or deployment permissions, so this remains an exposure gap rather than a verified attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The adapter accepts a document view and guard scope independently, and binding accepts a separately supplied backend. Correct association remains a caller responsibility, as it was for the existing core lease fence API. Fence values are coordination predicates, not unforgeable authorization capabilities. An absent or mismatched guard in the actual write backend fails the native check; incorrect wiring alone does not demonstrate a bypass.
  • observed — Document renewal and release check the configured holder and latest local epoch/version before invoking core operations, which additionally check durable holder, epoch, liveness, and release state. Memory-backend tests demonstrate rejection of stale protected document, stream, and blob writes after guard takeover.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — For document operations, interruption around a durable update can leave local grant bookkeeping behind the durable record, but subsequent renewal, release, and protected writes still consult durable identity or fencing predicates. Local process-exit recovery is supported by lock release and retained records; that evidence does not establish power-loss durability of replacement metadata.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the local store's supported crash-durability contract. Where epochs and unclean-takeover metadata must survive power loss, persist directory-entry changes before acknowledging ownership and validate recovery under that filesystem model. Also make trusted-root permissions and same-backend guard wiring explicit host-integration requirements.

40-50: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

State on LeaseStore what a reentrant acquire does to existing grants.

The two implementations disagree on reentrant acquire:

  • DocumentLeases::acquire (document.rs Lines 134-142) increments version when the same instance acquires a key again. Every earlier grant then gets LeaseError::Lost (document_tests.rs Lines 34-37 assert this).
  • LocalLeases::acquire (local.rs Lines 188-197) returns the current version unchanged. The earlier grant stays valid (lib_tests.rs Line 116 asserts this).

Host code written against LeaseStore therefore sees different grant invalidation depending on the backend. A host that re-acquires as a heartbeat, or that shares a grant between tasks, gets Lost on one backend and success on the other. Add a doc comment on the trait that names the required behavior. Then align one implementation to it.

Put the file-only dependencies behind the file feature, and document the feature and each entry.

Only local.rs uses sha2, serde and serde_json in non-test code, and local.rs compiles only with file. A default build still pulls in all three. file = ["dep:fs2"] has no comment that explains the feature. No dependency entry has the required "why" comment. The tests use serde_json::json! and run without the feature, so serde_json must also stay as a dev-dependency.

The crate-level doc names the entry points. It has no short runnable example. It also does not say what the crate deliberately leaves out, or why. Two examples: host profile/scope selection and heartbeat/skew policy, which the PR objectives assign to the host. Add a doctest, for example DocumentLeases over MemoryStorage that binds for_scope_fenced. Add a short paragraph that lists these exclusions.

As per coding guidelines: "Each crate's src/lib.rs carries its crate-level overview: what the crate does, the primary entry points, and a short runnable example. It should also say what the crate deliberately does not hold, and why."

Expand the crate-level documentation around `Leases` and `LocalLeases` with a
short runnable doctest demonstrating lease-backed fenced access, and add a brief
paragraph stating that host profile/scope selection and heartbeat/skew policy
remain host responsibilities.

Sync the lease directory after the rename so a crash cannot roll back the epoch.

write_record syncs the temp file and renames it to .lease.json. It does not sync the containing directory. On POSIX filesystems, a power loss after rename can lose the new directory entry and keep the old record. The next acquire then reads the older epoch and issues an epoch number that a previous tenure already had. LeaseGrant::epoch is documented as "the fencing epoch of this tenure", so two different tenures can end up with the same token. A lost released: true write also marks the next takeover as previous_unclean when it was not.

+                fs::rename(&temporary, &destination).map_err(storage_io)?;
+                #[cfg(unix)]
+                File::open(&dir)
+                    .and_then(|directory| directory.sync_all())
+                    .map_err(storage_io)?;
+                Ok(())
             })();

Based on learnings: "open the containing directory read-only and fsync it after the rename, so the renamed directory entry itself survives a crash/power loss."

Update write_record to sync the containing directory after the rename succeeds,
using a read-only directory handle and sync_all on Unix. Map any open or sync
failure through storage_io and preserve the existing error propagation.
