Linux can now host a peer's hotspot through NetworkManager, join one, and advertise the Bluetooth beacon through BlueZ, with the btleplug central finding hosts. NetworkManager is reached over zbus and the peripheral over bluer, behind LinuxHotspotBackend and LinuxBluetoothBackend, and every row of the hotspot and Bluetooth tables runs against a fake of that module. Decisions 29 to 33 in the plan cover the choices.

connetto-android-proof --linux-peer --every-join proves it against a phone. A headless client on the Linux machine stands in for the second phone and drives the same paths as the demo. On pippo's AX200 with the Galaxy M52 it passed all six joins in one unattended run, each side hosting once and the other joining by the beacon, the pasted payload and the typed form.

Linux clients lacked NetworkManager support for hosting and joining peer hotspots, and Linux peers lacked BlueZ beacon advertising. The peer flow also lacked a way to read linked peers and nearby hosts.

The change adds Linux hotspot and Bluetooth backends, plus a headless proof that exercises six joins using beacon, payload, and form methods. The supplied plan reports a successful run on pippo with a Galaxy M52.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds Linux BlueZ Bluetooth and NetworkManager hotspot backends, integrates them into client startup, and exposes linked-peer and nearby-host state. It also adds a Linux child-process leg and a proof mode that runs six joins between Linux and Android.

Changes: Linux peer support

Layer / File(s) Summary
BlueZ and NetworkManager I/O
crates/connetto-peer/src/linux/*, crates/connetto-peer/src/lib.rs, crates/connetto-peer/Cargo.toml
Adds Linux I/O contracts and implementations for BlueZ and NetworkManager. The code handles adapter, network, GATT, event, permission, timeout, and gateway state.
Linux client backends and startup
crates/connetto-client/src/bluetooth/linux.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/hotspot/linux.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/bluetooth.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/hotspot.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/builder/native.rs, crates/connetto-client/Cargo.toml
Adds Linux Bluetooth advertising and NetworkManager hotspot hosting and joining. Startup initializes these backends asynchronously. Bluetooth advertising retries after peripheral failure; hotspot hosting falls back from 5 GHz, and joining waits for an IPv4 gateway.
Peer and nearby-host state
crates/connetto-peer/src/node.rs, crates/connetto-peer/src/tests.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/enrolment/task.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/enrolment/tests.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/builder/native.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/bluetooth.rs, docs/architecture/19-device-to-device.md
Adds APIs for linked peer identities and nearby Bluetooth hosts. Tests cover link closure and expiry, nearby-host updates, and advertising failure recovery.
Linux proof leg and protocol
crates/connetto-test-harness/src/linux_leg.rs, crates/connetto-test-harness/src/linux_proof.rs, crates/connetto-test-harness/src/lib.rs, crates/connetto-test-harness/Cargo.toml
Adds a child-process client with JSON-lines commands, peer and nearby-host queries, hotspot and join actions, bounded waits, and Linux network-state helpers.
Android and Linux proof orchestration
crates/connetto-test-harness/src/bin/connetto-android-proof.rs, plans/master-implementation-plan.md, codecov.yml, sonar-project.properties
Adds --linux-peer mode for six hosting and join combinations. The runner records evidence, checks linked identities and routing, and restores network and Bluetooth state. The implementation plan records Linux decisions and proof observations.

Linux hosting and joining can stay unavailable until restart if the first Wi-Fi device lookup fails, and a Wi-Fi adapter added after startup is never used. The proof tooling can hide fatal leg errors and cleanup failures, so a run can report success while the phone is left off its network. The lockfile change also conflicts with the repository's git-dependency pinning rule. These should be resolved before merge.

Full details: No Placeholder Implementations

Explanation

No added lines in the reviewed diff contain the prohibited Rust, Python, or TypeScript placeholder forms, or TODO/FIXME/HACK/XXX markers. Added panic! calls use invariant or test-failure messages, not "not implemented" or "TODO".

Full details: No Blanket Diagnostic Suppression

Explanation

No added blanket diagnostic suppression was found. The Rust additions use item-scoped #[expect(..., reason = "...")] attributes for named lints such as dead_code, async_fn_in_trait, and specific Clippy lints. No added #[allow(dead_code)], #[allow(unused...)], #[allow(clippy::all)], crate-wide warnings suppression, Python suppression, or TypeScript suppression appears in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Behavior Change Carries A Test

Explanation

The pull request changes runtime code in client, peer, and harness source directories, but it also adds and changes tests. The diff adds test modules and assertions in the new Linux Bluetooth, hotspot, BlueZ, and NetworkManager implementations, and changes existing tests in crates/connetto-client/src/enrolment/tests.rs, crates/connetto-peer/src/tests.rs, and crates/connetto-test-harness/src/linux_proof.rs. The explicit failure condition is not met.

Full details: Pre-Alpha Has No Deployments

Explanation

The workspace version is 0.0.0, so the pre-alpha rule applies. The pull-request additions contain no migration guide or SQL, upgrade path, existing-deployment guidance, version-bump coordination, flag day, rollout sequence, deprecation window, backward-compatibility shim, or alias kept for old clients. The added uses of “deployment,” “legacy advertisement,” and NetworkManager “aliases” do not describe those prohibited deployment practices.

Full details: Prose Punctuation

Explanation

No added prose contains an em dash, en dash, curly quote, ellipsis, semicolon, or punctuation dash between words. The only semicolon found in a word-context scan is Rust array syntax in hotspot/linux.rs; standalone dashes occur only in allowed list markers or compound names.

Full details: Git Dependency Pin Stays Out Of Commits

Explanation

Invariant broken: the pull request modifies both Cargo.lock and examples/dioxus-desktop-demo/Cargo.lock, while repository manifests declare Git dependencies without rev or tag. Examples include branch-only diesel, sqlparser, and sqlparser_derive in examples/dioxus-desktop-demo/Cargo.toml:97-99, and diesel-sqlite-session in crates/connetto-client/Cargo.toml:109. The lockfile diff adds dependency entries, so the changed-lockfile condition applies.

Resolution

Pin every Git dependency without an explicit rev or tag to an immutable revision or tag, then regenerate both changed lockfiles. Alternatively, revert both lockfile changes.

Full details: Crate Readme Is The Crate Documentation

Explanation

The PR changes crates/connetto-client/src/lib.rs and crates/connetto-test-harness/src/lib.rs, but neither file contains #![doc = include_str!("../README.md")], and neither crate has a README.md. crates/connetto-peer/src/lib.rs satisfies the invariant. No Rust README fence uses ignore or no_run.

Resolution

Add README.md and the required #![doc = include_str!("../README.md")] attribute to connetto-client and connetto-test-harness, or leave their src/lib.rs files unchanged if those crates are out of scope.

- Around line 158-160: Update the `RecvError::Lagged` branch in the
event-receive loop to fail the proof rather than only logging and continuing,
since missed events may include unrecoverable fatal notices. Alternatively,
ensure fatal notices such as `DeviceRevoked` and `PeerListenFailed` are
delivered through a lossless path.

- Around line 835-845: Update the event handling around read_env and the
AddError::Failed path to forward DeviceAdded and DeviceRemoved events and
refresh env.devices for either event, then refresh it after AddError::Failed
before fallback or any subsequent request. Ensure read_env continues to update
env.devices from NetworkManager’s current managed Wi-Fi devices and paths.

Review comments at
@crates/connetto-test-harness/src/bin/connetto-android-proof.rs:
- Around line 2308-2310: Update the fallback-button lookup in `approve` so an
error from `dialog_button_bounds` is logged and treated as no fallback button,
rather than propagated with `?`. Continue the existing PIN-entry flow when the
lookup fails.
- Around line 1612-1626: Update `linux_section` to preserve cleanup failures
from `adapter`, `leg_closed`, `phone_back`, and `bluetooth` alongside the walk
result instead of only printing them. Pass the teardown outcome through
`linux_joins_with_summary` to `summary`, and return teardown failure after the
summary is written, matching the behavior of `joins_with_summary`.

Review comments at @crates/connetto-test-harness/src/linux_leg.rs:
- Around line 660-662: In the stdout reader’s fatal-event branch, retain the
first fatal cause in shared state and wake pending waiters; update
LegClient::request to check that cause before writing a command and when its
wait ends, returning the stored cause instead of allowing the proof to time out
or succeed.
