fix!: include referenced Jinja macros in standalone audit metadata hash - #6179
Editing a Jinja macro used by a standalone audit now changes the audit's fingerprint.
Before this change, StandaloneAudit.metadata_hash ignored the audit's Jinja macro registry. If you changed only a macro body, the rendered audit query changed but sqlmesh plan did not list the audit. Models already hash their registry in _data_hash_values_no_sql. This gap came up in review of #6120.
The fix adds jinja_macros.data_hash_values to the hash only when the registry holds macros: any root_macros, or a package that contains macros. An empty registry still produces '{}' from its refs, sources and vars. Trimming can also leave an empty package behind, such as target from {{ target.name }}. Counting either of those would rehash audits that use no macros.
With this condition:
Audits without Jinja macros keep the same hash. This includes audits that only read attributes such as {{ target.name }}.
A change to a macro that the audit does not reference doesn't change the hash.
When the registry holds macros, the hash also includes its refs, sources and vars, as it does for models.
dbt vars that JSON can't represent
dbt loads an unquoted YAML date, such as cutoff: 2024-01-02 in dbt_project.yml, as a date object. JinjaMacroRegistry.data_hash_values passed it to json.dumps, which raised TypeError. On main, a dbt model that uses such a var already fails to load. With the audit change alone, dbt data tests that use one would fail too.
data_hash_values now hashes each value that JSON can't represent as its type name and string form, for example {"__type__": "datetime.date", "value": "2024-01-02"}. Keeping the type means a date and its ISO string hash differently, because a macro can tell them apart. The fallback only applies to values JSON can't represent, so every hash that works today stays the same. This change is in shared code, so it also fixes the existing failure for dbt models.
Upgrade impact
The PR adds an empty migration, v0103_include_jinja_macros_in_standalone_audit_fingerprint.py, the same way #5758 did for its hash change. The migration bumps the schema version, so sqlmesh migrate recomputes the stored fingerprints of standalone audits that use Jinja macros. After migrating, sqlmesh plan shows no changes for them.
This mostly affects dbt projects. Each dbt data test references the get_where_subquery and should_store_failures macros (sqlmesh/dbt/manifest.py), so its registry is never empty.
This change doesn't touch model audits. load_audit sets jinja_macros only for standalone audits, so a model audit's registry is always empty.
The hash of an audit that uses {{ target.name }} matches its value on main.
test_standalone_audit_metadata_hash_with_date_var
An audit with macros and a date var hashes without an error.
If the fix adds the registry unconditionally, the three "ignores" and "unchanged" tests that pin main values fail. If it counts empty packages, the attribute-only test fails.
New test in tests/utils/test_jinja.py:
test_macro_registry_data_hash_values_with_non_json_vars checks three things:
A date var hashes with its type.
A date and its ISO string produce different hash values.
A registry with only JSON values produces the same hash values as before.
Both date tests fail on main with TypeError: Object of type date is not JSON serializable. With a plain default=str fallback, the date-versus-string check fails.
I also checked a copy of sushi_dbt with cutoff_date: 2024-01-02 in its vars:
A singular data test that uses the var loads on main but fails with TypeError on the audit change alone. With the fallback, it loads.
A model that uses the var fails to load on main with the same TypeError. With this branch, it loads and renders '2024-01-02'.
I ran the steps of .github/scripts/test_migration.sh for sushi_dbt by hand. I planned the project with sqlmesh 0.236.4, then ran sqlmesh migrate and sqlmesh diff prod with this branch:
Without the migration, the schema version stays at 102 -> 102, and diff prod lists 9 dbt tests under Metadata Updated. This matches the CI failure on an earlier commit.
With the migration, the schema version goes 102 -> 103, and diff prod reports no changes.
tests/core/test_audit.py, tests/utils/test_jinja.py and tests/core/state_sync pass, except test_model_inline_audits, which needs BigQuery libraries I don't have installed. In tests/dbt (not slow), the same 12 tests fail on this branch and on main, all on missing adapter libraries. ruff and mypy report no problems in the changed files.

Bug Fixes
Audit metadata now changes when a referenced root or package Jinja macro changes, while changes to unreferenced macros do not affect it.
Audits without macros retain their existing metadata hashes, including those using attribute-only Jinja expressions.
Global values, including dates and other non-JSON values, are handled consistently when calculating metadata hashes. Identical inputs continue to produce stable hashes.
StandaloneAudit.metadata_hash ignored the audit's trimmed Jinja macro
registry, so editing only the body of a Jinja macro used by a standalone
audit changed the rendered audit query but not the audit's fingerprint.
`sqlmesh plan` did not pick up the change.
The registry's hash values are now included when it holds macros (root
macros or package macros). Audits without Jinja macros keep their exact
hash, including registries that only carry refs/sources/vars globals.
Standalone audits that use Jinja macros, including dbt data tests, get
a new metadata hash once on upgrade. This is a metadata-only change:
no backfill.

Standalone audit metadata hashes now include Jinja macro registry hash values when root macros or package macros exist. Registry hash values support non-JSON-serializable globals. Tests cover macro references, global objects, and audits without macros.
The registry uses a fallback representation containing the fully qualified type and string form for globals that JSON cannot serialize. Tests check date-valued globals and confirm JSON-serializable values retain their expected hash values.
The metadata hash includes registry hash values when root macros or package macros exist. Tests cover referenced and unreferenced macros, global objects, audits without macros, attribute-only Jinja, and deterministic hashes. The migration module defines no-op schema and row migration functions.
SQLMesh/sqlmesh#6120: Supplies project Jinja macros to the final standalone audit. This PR includes the registry in the standalone audit metadata hash.
SQLMesh/sqlmesh#6189: Adds a migration numbered 103 from the same base revision and changes a state fingerprint contract. This PR also adds a migration numbered 103.
Merge Risk: Low · up to a4483
Standalone audits with Jinja macros now include macro content in their metadata hash, and dbt date variables no longer break hashing. A narrow gap remains: date-valued variables are stored as plain strings when snapshots are saved and reloaded. A macro that uses date attributes on such a variable could then behave differently. This is unlikely to affect most projects, so the merge risk is low.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a4483
The change improves detection of audit changes without establishing a new privilege or execution path. The main residual risk is that newly supported date-valued settings may not retain identical meaning after snapshots are saved and restored.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: Newly accepted date-valued model globals do not preserve their typed hash representation through snapshot JSON persistence. Fresh and recovered nodes can therefore produce different registry hash inputs. Type-sensitive macros may also render differently on cold recovery or rollback, weakening snapshot reproducibility. Ordinary reads restore cached fingerprint fields rather than validating this discrepancy; the downstream rendering effect has not been demonstrated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated propagation scope is project audit and SQL model fingerprints, plus snapshot identities in their configured state store. The inspected changes do not establish increased tenant reach, credentials, IAM authority, or network exposure.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — No PR-introduced authorization or code-execution bypass was established in the traced hashing paths. Macro text and selected globals become fingerprint inputs; rendering remains a separate consumer. This conclusion is limited to the inspected paths, not a claim of complete security coverage.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — The new str conversion can invoke behavior on custom in-process objects, but the inspected dbt producer supplies configuration values and relation metadata. No remote route to attacker-defined Python objects or newly granted execution authority was identified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing migration containment includes a transaction wrapper, snapshot-row locking, checks before inserting migrated identities, and backup rollback on caught exceptions unless backups were skipped. These controls are counterevidence to an unqualified partial-migration concern; they do not establish guarantees for every database adapter or concurrent migration.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve equivalent typed-global semantics across snapshot persistence, and verify fingerprint and rendered-query stability through cold restoration, migration, and rollback for date-valued settings.

Trimming the registry for an audit that only reads an attribute, such as
{{ target.name }}, leaves an empty package entry. The previous check
treated that as macros being present and rehashed the audit. Only count
packages that hold macros, and pin the hash of such an audit to its value
on main.

Pass the registry to the final audit.
load_multiple_audits omits jinja_macros from its final load_audit call. The project loader uses this path, so the last standalone audit in each file gets an empty registry and cannot benefit from the new hash. Pass the registry here, as in the preceding call, and cover the project-loading path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Changing the standalone audit metadata hash inputs needs a schema
version bump, so that `sqlmesh migrate` recomputes stored fingerprints.
Without it, standalone audits that use Jinja macros, including dbt data
tests, show as modified after upgrading.

dbt loads an unquoted YAML date, such as `cutoff: 2024-01-02`, as a
`date` object. JinjaMacroRegistry.data_hash_values passed it to
json.dumps, which raised TypeError. Models that used such a var already
failed to load, and hashing standalone audit registries would have
extended the failure to dbt data tests.
Pass `default=str` so these values hash as their string form. It only
applies to values JSON can't represent, so existing hashes don't change.

Preserve date types through snapshot serialization.
The new hash fallback lets SQL models with date-valued vars reach snapshot persistence. Snapshot JSON serializes those dates as strings, and _validate_global_objs does not restore them. After reload, a macro using var('cutoff').year can therefore render differently or fail. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Encode and restore supported non-JSON types in registry persistence, and test a snapshot round trip.

Update the registry persistence flow used by _convert to encode supported
non-JSON values such as dates and restore their original types during snapshot
reload; ensure _validate_global_objs does not leave restored dates as strings.
Add a snapshot round-trip test verifying a date-valued variable retains its type
and supports attribute access after reload.
With default=str, a date var and its ISO string hashed the same, so
changing one into the other didn't change the fingerprint even though a
macro could tell them apart. Hash non-JSON values with their type name.
JSON-serializable values are unchanged.

Preserve date types when snapshots are restored.
The new fallback allows date-valued variables to be fingerprinted, but snapshot persistence writes them as JSON strings. parse_snapshot then restores those strings without converting them back to dates. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
The restored registry has different hash values. A macro that uses var('cutoff').year can also fail after restoration. Preserve the type in snapshot serialization and restore it in the validator.

Update the global_objs serializer and the validator used by parse_snapshot to
preserve and restore date values as dates rather than plain JSON strings. Ensure
restored values retain their original types so registry fingerprints remain
stable and date attributes such as year remain usable.
